Socotra is one of the most isolated landforms on Earth of continental origin. Having split from Gondwana millions of years ago, its extreme heat and drought conditions generated a bizarre, prehistoric plant flora.
The most famous species is the Dragon Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari), shaped like an upturned umbrella designed to capture mist from low-lying coastal moisture.
